Rethinking Eye Bags: Eye Bag Correction & Midface Rejuvenation (Also known as Lower eyelid blepharoplasty)

There is nothing more frustrating than being told you look tired ALL THE TIME, even though you are well rested. And no matter how much you have spent on treatments and creams promising to reduce your eye bags, you still don’t get the desired results.

You’re not alone, many people have baggy and puffy lower eyelids. They generally occur due to aging and weakening of muscles and ligaments, that makes everyone look tired and worn down.

Many patients come to me with eye bag problems. This simple problem can be easily addressed with lower blepharoplasty surgery, and this procedure has been performed for many years and remains very popular.

  • 44 Year-old Tired of Eye Bags

I have been told I look tired way too often (for years now and even since high school). And the truth is, I do. While good sleep helps, or has helped to diminish, them, the ageing process has made sleep hardly a factor in how my eyes look. The bags under my eyes that make me look other than I feel and am. My eye bags are totally out of sync with rest of my facial features and skin. I'm so glad I made to choice to remove them permanently with Dr Vanessa.

Q: What is Eye Bag Correction / Lower Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)?

A: It is the removal of excess fat and tightening of the skin, which can drastically minimise the appearance of baggy and puffy lower eyelids. This procedure provides both men and woman a sense of well-being and alertness.

Q: When should I perform this surgery?

A: Eye bag correction surgery is a procedure that the best results are achieved when performed earlier than later.

Q: What causes bags under eyes?

A: With ageing, the tissues around your eyes and the muscles supporting your eyelids, weaken. Normal fat that helps support the eyes can then move into the lower eyelids, making the lids look puffy.

Puffy eyes – Under-eye bags are not always caused by fatigue or allergies. The bags that are seen are usually due to lower eyelid fat prolapse. The fat that prolapses is referred to as orbital fat.

Loose Skin – Many people are concerned that after the under eye bags are removed from under the eyes, there will be loose skin. Depending on the support of the lower eyelid, loose skin can be addressed during surgery at the same time. This is what we refer to as mid face rejuvenation.

Often, the skin that accommodated the eye bags/fat pockets is toned during surgery by tightening the underlying muscle. This muscle contracts like a belt and tightens loose skin.

Eyelid Support – Properly restoring lower eyelid support requires several different specialised techniques. In addition, the support structures of the eyelid can be shaped in a way that can create a brighter appearance to the eyes.

Q: How is midface rejuvenation performed?

A: During the eye bag surgery the Surgeon can lift the sagging midface through the same incision giving a more youthful and toned appearance.

Q: Choosing the right surgeon?

A: The most important element in lower eyelid surgery is knowing exactly how much fat and/or skin needs to be removed. An experienced Oculoplastic Surgeon will know how much skin can be safely removed and can clearly explain what can be achieved with lower eyelid surgery.

Q: How about recovery?

A: To minimise recovery and complications from scarring, the excess fat that is causing the puffiness is removed from the inside of the lower eyelids (transconjunctival approach).

If you do not need skin tightening procedures, you can expect your post-operative recovery to be only 1-2  weeks (provided you are compliant with our post-operative instructions).

If you require skin tightening procedures to be done, you can expect to have noticeable improvement of the eye bags within the same 1-2 weeks period. The small incision will take approximately a few months to disappear. The results vary with each individual but the scar is so minimal that very few people ever mention it.

Q: Do I need to stay or be admitted into hospital?

A: No, most of our patients have this procedure performed on an outpatient basis (same day surgery) where you return home after the procedure.

Q: Will It Hurt?

A: During the procedure, most patients are sedated and very comfortable. The greatest discomfort is usually associated with the first application of numbing medication, after which most patients feel only gentle tugging and occasional pressure. After the procedure, most of the discomfort is mild and gone within a few hours.
